The Mexican Artist Making Ordinary Pencil Drawings Appear Illuminated

A pencil drawing cannot physically give off light. Graphite is grey, paper is white, and artists traditionally create brightness by darkening everything around a highlight. Yet one artist from Puebla, Mexico, has found a way to make viewers feel as though a fluorescent light has suddenly switched on inside his drawings.

His name is Enrique Bernal, though many people know him as Kike. His portraits and animal drawings begin with mechanical pencils, pens, and hours of careful shading. Then, after the traditional work is complete, he adds something that changes how the entire image is perceived.

A Traditional Drawing Meets Modern Technology

Bernal begins with the slow, demanding process of drawing by hand. He builds faces, animals, and figures through layers of graphite, carefully shaping hair, skin, shadows, and subtle changes in texture until the image already has a strong sense of depth.

Once the drawing is finished, he turns to Medibang Paint, a free digital painting application. There, he adds artificial light over selected parts of the image, creating an effect one write-up described as an imitation of an “unknown fluorescent light source.”

The description fits because the source of the light is often nowhere to be seen. There may be no lamp, no window, and no visible object outside the frame. Yet the face appears to be illuminated by something the viewer cannot quite locate.

The digital glow may come later, but it depends on the work underneath. Every strand of hair and shift from shadow to skin has already been placed by hand. The technology adds another layer to a process rooted in traditional observation and patience.

Why Artists Have Always Struggled With Light

The challenge Bernal is working around is much older than digital art. A sheet of white paper already contains the brightest surface available to a pencil artist, so graphite can make an area darker but cannot physically make it brighter.

Artist and instructor Lee Hammond has explained the principle simply: “If the paper is white already, your highlights are already there.” Her approach asks artists to create enough contrast for untouched areas of paper to begin feeling luminous.

Hammond’s advice to students is equally direct: “Let your darks create your lights.” For generations, artists have relied on this relationship between brightness and shadow to make candles, streetlamps, and faces in darkness appear convincing.

Bernal begins with the same visual principle, then takes the process somewhere earlier generations could not. He adds controlled color and digital bloom over a finished hand-drawn image, allowing the page to suggest a kind of illumination that graphite alone cannot produce.

The Work Hidden Beneath The Effect

The glow attracts attention immediately, but it only works because the drawing already understands the form beneath it. Bernal has to make a series of precise decisions before the digital layer can feel believable.

  • Choosing the right edges: Cheekbones, jawlines, and shoulders catch light differently, so placement determines whether the effect feels natural.
  • Building convincing shadows: The surrounding darkness gives the glow context and helps the eye interpret brightness.
  • Using color selectively: Too much illumination can flatten the image and make the effect resemble an ordinary filter.

The application itself may be free, but the hours required to build the drawing underneath cannot be downloaded. The technology works because it is placed on a foundation of observation and technical skill.

One of the strangest things about Bernal’s work is how little visual information the viewer needs. A narrow line of light along one side of a face can suggest a lamp somewhere outside the picture, while a faint glow across a shoulder can make the surrounding darkness feel like physical space.

The brain begins filling in what the image does not show. There may be no visible room, but the mind quietly constructs one. There may be no fluorescent bulb, but the eye still searches for its source.

In some pieces, Bernal moves beyond realistic lighting altogether. Butterflies appear to shine, while tattoos seem to burn through the skin as though something luminous exists beneath the surface.

Those images create their own visual logic. Instead of asking viewers to imagine an unseen room, they suggest a world where light can emerge from unexpected places and familiar objects can carry an almost otherworldly energy.

The Science Behind Seeing Something Glow

Vision researchers have studied similar effects and found that brightness is more complicated than the amount of physical light reaching the eye. Certain arrangements of bright areas and fading gradients can create what researchers describe as brightness enhancement and a perception of self-luminosity.

In practical terms, the eye can begin interpreting a pattern as something that produces light rather than simply reflects it. A pale area on a page remains physically unchanged, but the surrounding visual information can alter how the brain experiences it.

Research has also explored how strongly the body responds to illusions involving brightness. In a 2012 study, researchers in Norway tracked participants’ pupils while they looked at images designed to create the illusion of intense light.

The images were not producing additional physical brightness, yet participants’ pupils constricted rapidly. Bruno Laeng, one of the researchers, explained that the response has a protective function: “The function is to protect the retina.”

Bernal’s drawings themselves have not been tested in this way, and the study used controlled visual patterns rather than portraits. Still, the research offers an interesting window into the visual mechanism his work appears to explore, where carefully arranged marks can convince the eye that something is brighter than the material surface allows.

The Eye Sees More Than The Paper Contains

This may explain why Bernal’s work feels so compelling. The viewer understands that the drawing is not physically glowing, yet the image can still create the sensation that light exists inside it.

There is something deeply fascinating about the distance between knowledge and perception. Human beings understand many things intellectually while experiencing them differently on a more immediate level, and art often works inside that space.

A song can bring back a memory with startling clarity. A photograph can create intimacy with someone the viewer has never met. A collection of graphite marks can suggest depth, movement, texture, and brightness even though none of those things physically exist on the page.

Bernal’s work makes this process unusually visible because the illusion is so direct. The viewer can understand, at least in theory, how the effect was created, but understanding the technique does not necessarily weaken the experience.

Another detail adds to the mystery surrounding Bernal’s work. Despite the attention his drawings have received, publicly available coverage contains little explanation from the artist about why he began creating these effects or what the artificial light means to him.

There appears to be no widely circulated artist statement explaining where the idea came from. Much of the coverage has focused on the finished images and the unusual process behind them rather than on Bernal’s own interpretation.

That absence leaves space for the viewer. Some people may see his work as a clever meeting point between traditional and digital art, while others may respond more strongly to the atmosphere created by the glow.

A fluorescent edge across a face can feel cold, intimate, lonely, or futuristic depending on the surrounding image. The same technique can create very different emotional worlds, allowing each viewer to bring personal associations to what they see.

What Happens Between The Image And The Mind

Nothing on Bernal’s desk is actually glowing. A finished print contains graphite, white paper, and carefully placed digital color, but the sensation of illumination emerges through the relationship between the image and the person looking at it.

The mind reads shadows and gradients, predicts where light should fall, and constructs a physical environment from a surprisingly small number of clues. The viewer may know that no lamp exists, yet the visual system can still respond to the suggestion that one is nearby.

That is part of what makes this work feel larger than a technical trick. The artist provides the marks, but the viewer’s perception completes the experience.

Bernal’s process also offers an interesting picture of creativity in the digital age. New technology does not always replace older methods. Sometimes it reveals possibilities hidden inside them, allowing a pencil drawing to move beyond the limits that once defined it.
