Scientists Communicate With Sleeping People Inside Their Dreams

A dream can feel like the most private place imaginable. Yet a series of experiments suggests that, under rare conditions, a sleeping person may hear a question from the waking world and send an answer back.

The findings do not mean dreams have become a reliable communication channel. They do, however, offer a fascinating glimpse into what the human mind may still be capable of while the body sleeps.

A Conversation Across the Boundary of Sleep

Imagine becoming aware inside a dream while someone outside asks you a question. That was the unusual situation faced by participants in a 2021 study published in Current Biology, involving researchers from four laboratories in the United States, France, Germany, and the Netherlands.

Thirty-six people took part across 57 sleep sessions. The researchers focused on people capable of lucid dreaming, meaning they could sometimes recognize that they were dreaming without waking up.

The goal was to send information into the dreamer’s sleeping world and see whether they could understand it and respond. Karen Konkoly, a Northwestern University doctoral student who led the work, said, “We put the results together because we felt that the combination of results from four different labs using different approaches most convincingly attests to the reality of this phenomenon of two-way communication.”

Nobody was reading another person’s thoughts. Researchers used carefully designed signals and measured physical responses, but the results still challenged the assumption that sleep completely separates us from the outside world.

How Dreamers Sent Their Answers

REM sleep created an unusual opportunity for the experiments. Most major muscles become temporarily inactive during this stage, but eye movements and subtle facial muscle contractions remain possible.

Those movements became the researchers’ way of communicating with people inside dreams. At Northwestern University, researchers presented arithmetic problems aloud and trained participants to answer through prearranged patterns of sideways eye movements.

A sleeper might hear a question such as eight minus six and respond by moving their eyes twice. In Germany, questions could arrive through flashes of light encoded in Morse code, while participants used their eyes to send signals back.

Ken Paller, the study’s senior author at Northwestern, described what the team believed it had demonstrated. “We also showed that dreamers are capable of comprehending questions, engaging in working-memory operations, and producing answers.”

What Did the Questions Feel Like?

Participants described the outside signals in surprising ways. One French participant with narcolepsy and extensive lucid dreaming experience said he heard the researchers’ voice while still inside his dream.

“I heard you asking questions. I heard your voice as if you were a God. Your voice was coming from the outside, just like a narrator of a movie,” he said.

Another participant compared hearing mathematical questions to “a sort of radio in the car.” The dreaming brain did not always experience these signals as ordinary sounds, and outside information could become part of the strange internal logic of a dream.

Most Attempts Still Failed

The experiments did not produce effortless conversations between scientists and sleeping volunteers. Across 158 attempts, participants gave correct answers 29 times, or roughly 18% of the time.

Five answers were incorrect, while 28 responses were too ambiguous to score. In 96 attempts, there was no response at all, and only six of the 36 volunteers ever produced a correct answer.

Those numbers matter because they prevent the findings from being exaggerated. Dream communication remains difficult, unpredictable, and dependent on carefully controlled conditions.

Several elements helped make the experiments possible:

  • Lucid dreaming experience: Some participants already knew how to recognize they were dreaming.
  • Sleep monitoring: Researchers identified appropriate stages of sleep using laboratory equipment.
  • Prearranged responses: Participants learned how to answer through eye movements or facial contractions.
  • Simple questions: The exchanges involved tasks such as arithmetic rather than lengthy conversations.
  • Repeated attempts: Most communication attempts produced no successful response.

The findings therefore do not suggest that anyone can fall asleep and begin chatting with the outside world. What they show is narrower and perhaps stranger: under certain conditions, a sleeping brain can receive information, understand a question, process it, and push an answer back.

Sleep May Also Help Solve Problems

Konkoly and Paller continued investigating what happens when information enters the sleeping mind. In research published in February 2026, they explored whether REM sleep could help people solve problems they had failed to solve while awake.

Twenty participants took part, all with some lucid dreaming experience. Researchers paired difficult puzzles with specific soundtracks and later played those sounds during REM sleep to reactivate memories connected to the unresolved problems.

In 12 of the 20 participants, solving rates on reactivated puzzles doubled the following morning, rising from 20% to 40%. Puzzles that appeared in dreams were solved 42% of the time, compared with 17% for puzzles that did not appear in dreams.

Why Less Control Could Help

One result was particularly interesting. Participants who consciously directed their dreams appeared to perform worse on the problem-solving task than those whose dreams unfolded without the same degree of control.

Konkoly told TIME, “We had a lower solving rate for puzzles incorporated into lucid dreams.” Paller suggested that the unconscious mind may process several ideas without the narrow focus that often shapes waking thought.

“Your unconscious mind has all this plurality of simultaneously thinking about 10 things at once,” he said. “It’s not limited by a single track.”

The research does not explain every part of that process, but it raises the possibility that sleep may allow the mind to approach certain problems differently.

A Startup Claims Dreamers Shared a Word

The evidence becomes less certain when the conversation shifts from communication between researchers and dreamers to communication between two sleeping people. In September 2024, a California startup called REMspace claimed it had transferred information from one lucid dreamer to another.

According to the company, a server selected a random word and transmitted it through earbuds to one participant after they entered a lucid dream. Several minutes later, a second participant reportedly entered a lucid dream, received the same word, and repeated it.

The claim had not been peer reviewed according to the source material, meaning independent researchers had not yet verified the result through the same process as the 2021 study.

That distinction is essential. The earlier research gained strength from four laboratories using different methods and finding evidence supporting the same basic phenomenon, while the REMspace claim remains an unverified report requiring further examination.

What Dreams Reveal About Consciousness

These experiments raise a question that humans have asked for centuries: what happens to consciousness when we sleep? Dreams create experiences that can feel entirely real while unfolding inside the mind.

Modern science studies dreams through brain activity, memory, emotion, and perception. The experiments do not settle larger questions about consciousness, but they suggest that the boundary between waking awareness and dreaming may be more flexible than it appears.

In one experiment in Osnabrück, a participant dreamed of being in a stable room when lights began to flicker. The flashes were signals from researchers outside.

The dreamer searched the imagined environment for a way to respond and found a round bowl filled with water. “The water flashed,” the participant later recalled, “like a fish tank light that one turns on and off.”

Outside the dream, researchers watched the participant’s signals through sensors and recorded what happened. The imagined world remained deeply personal, yet a small piece of communication crossed its boundary.

The Sleeping Mind Is Not Completely Silent

It would be easy to turn these findings into claims about telepathy or a future where people hold long conversations while asleep. The evidence does not support those conclusions, and the researchers’ results show how difficult successful communication remains.

Yet what has been demonstrated is already remarkable. On rare occasions, a sleeping person can receive information from the waking environment, understand a question, process it mentally, and produce a measurable response.

The body may be resting, but the mind continues creating worlds, processing memories, and revisiting unresolved problems. Sometimes, under carefully observed conditions, it can even respond to something waiting outside the dream.

The boundary between waking and dreaming may be difficult to cross, and most attempts still lead nowhere. But the moments when a question enters a dream and an answer returns suggest that sleep is far more mentally active than silence alone would have us believe.
